Here are some statistics about our community:

  • There are 67,573 people living in the community. 48% of residents are Latino, 47% African-American, and 3% White.

  • 51% of residents are under age 25, making it the community with the most youth in Chicago. Many do not finish high school -- over 50% of residents over 18 do not have a high school diploma. The percentage of people who never reached 9th grade is nearly three times that of Cook County as a whole.

  • 45.8% of all families with children are headed by single mothers. This is the third highest ranking in Chicago.

  • The vast majority of families are below the poverty level. 46% of children aged 3-5 are below the poverty level, and over 97% of families of children attending the public schools are low income.

  • The area is home to 30 gangs. The 3 police districts in our area rank within the top districts for gang-related arrests.

  • 76.5% of residents are renters. Of those, 44% are paying over 35% of their income in rent.
