The Youth Council brings together residents between 11 & 18 years of age to address issues that affect youth in the community. These young people choose their own issues, develop strategies to address the issues, speak in public & with the press, and do outreach in the community. Working together, the youth have:

  • Designed & painted a mural on a local viaduct which had been the target of gang graffiti. In addition, youth have designed portable murals that are displayed at local schools and churches.

  • Won funding for after-school programs, new windows and roof, and other major repairs at a local school;

  • Worked on campaigns to hold local police accountable for their actions.

  • Launched a campaign for a local youth center. Youth are currently meeting with officials from After School Matters and the Chicago Department of Human Services to win funding for new programs.

    Working together with the Brighton Park Youth Council, the youth have also formed Chicago Youth United, a citywide youth coalition.
