Blocks Together's Women's Organizing Project unites low-income women from the community to learn leadership skills and work together to address issues that affect them. This is one of the only community organizations in the country that uses an organizing model to address women's issues.
The project has united thousands of women from West Humboldt and North Garfield Parks to address a variety of issues. Working together since 1999, the women have won:
- Investigation into the claims of women improperly removed from the Section 8 waitlist. Dozens of women were able to successfully appeal their cases, and many immediately received vouchers;
- Better services for Section 8 recipients, including regular workshops on their rights, and improved landlord outreach;
- Bilingual GED classes with free on-site day care, serving hundreds of women in the community.
The Women's Organizing Project is now addressing the lack of adequate health care in the community. Women have already won support for a health center, and have completed an extensive study detailing the health care needs of over 350 families. They will fight to make sure the promise of a clinic becomes a reality.
